DETROIT – The highly criticized replacement for Lions kicker Jason Hanson, David Akers, will not be brought back by the team in 2014.
Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said the team will also cut ties with fan favorite, safety John Wendling, defensive end Israel Idonije, offensive lineman Dylan Gandy, and linebacker Rocky McIntosh.
The most notable release, Akers, was 19/24 on field goal attempts last year, which was his second worst conversion rate since 2007. John Wendling was known as the special teams start for the Lions, and was named a team captain for the last two seasons.
Last week, the Lions released wide receiver Nate Burleson, and safety Louis Delmas.
