Michigan climbs to No. 18, MSU falls to No. 4 in latest AP Poll

DETROIT – The Michigan Wolverines jumped into the AP Poll's top 20 for the first time this season, rising to No. 18 overall after a 28-0 beat down of Maryland. Michigan State, which held on for a 24-21 home win over Purdue, fell to No. 4 in the poll.

Michigan benefitted from losses by a slew of ranked teams, jumping former No. 21 Mississippi State, Wisconsin (19), Georgia (9) and UCLA (7). Four top 10 teams lost Saturday in the wildest week of the young season.

The Spartans were jumped by a pair of Big 12 teams, TCU and Baylor, who blew out lesser opponents in Week 5. TCU crushed Texas 50-7 and Baylor outgunned Texas Tech, 63-35.

Four teams split the first-place votes this week, with Ohio State earning 38, Baylor earning 10, Utah picking up seven and TCU falling in with five.

Michigan's next opponent, Northwestern, will arrive in Ann Arbor Saturday as the No. 13 team in the country after waxing Minnesota, 27-0.

No. 22 Iowa jumped into the polls as the Big Ten's fourth representative after winning, 10-6, at Wisconsin.
