Tips for playing golf in college

Hi Guys – Welcome back!

I had an opportunity to talk with a college recruiter this weekend about golf programs.

I was specifically wondering, what I can do now to be appealing to colleges.

First off, he made a point to talk about grades. He said that colleges won't look at golfers who don't take school seriously. In addition, if you don't have decent grades, you won't be accepted into most colleges anyway.

Second, he talked about athletics. He said that they look for kids who play more than one sport. Lettering in two to three varsity sports shows athleticism, which is not something they can teach.

Third, he spoke about tournament play. He mentioned that high school events are less important than tournaments (unless it is at a state championship level). He said that they mainly look at summer tournaments and want to know about the field of competition. The average scores colleges look at depends on the school.

A top 20 college will want an average score of 72 (for male golfers). A midlevel division 1 school is looking for an average of 75 or better.

While division 2 schools look for an average of 75-80.  Division 3 schools can range from 75-85 depending on the program.

For females, division 1 colleges will look at golfers who score an average of 85-90.

A great resource to use is www.collegegolf.com which is the Ping American Golf Guide (online).

There are different levels of membership but it is worth the investment and is considered the bible of college golf.  It also has an online score converter that will take your high school scores and convert them to college scores – pretty cool!

So, if you are serious about earning a college golf scholarship or playing college golf, start planning now! Build your golf resume and take notes on every tournament you play.

Till next time!
