On the Course with Krause: Don't reach for the ball

DETROIT – One of the most common errors amateur golfers make at address is reaching for the ball with their club (see photo on left).

When a golfer reaches, they bend too much at the knees and strain with their arms out straight, which puts them too far from the ball.

It is a big contributor to slicing and promotes an outside-to-in swing path.

A much more effective set-up is where a golfer allows his/her arms to dangle from the socket (see photo on right).  To find your correct distance, get in your swing posture and let your arms hang naturally.

Then put your hands together. This is where you should grip every club in the bag.

The result will be less tension in the arms and hands; helping you release your club therefore reducing the slice.
