Coaches team up for American Cancer Society's Beat Cancer event in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland's Greg Kampe, Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Detroit Pistons' Stan Van Gundy are among the coaches and basketball analysts participating in the American Cancer Society's Beat Cancer event in Rochester.

Starting on April 26, 2017, 11 elite men’s basketball coaches and VIPs will take part in an auction to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. The online auction, open to the public, will offer bidders the unique opportunity to attend “Beat Cancer,” a two-day event presented by the Ken & Kathy McCarter Foundation. Auction winners and their guests will spend time with their favorite coach or broadcaster at a private dinner on Sunday, June 4 and golf outing at the prestigious Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., on Monday, June 5, 2017.

Coaches and notable names taking part in the auction, include:

  • Greg Kampe – Oakland University
  • Tom Izzo – Michigan State University
  • Stan Van Gundy – Detroit Pistons
  • Rick Barnes – University of Tennessee
  • Mick Cronin – University of Cincinnati
  • Fran Fraschilla – ESPN (former St. John’s and New Mexico coach)
  • Chris Holtmann – Butler
  • Steve Lavin – Fox Sports (former UCLA and St. John’s coach)
  • Frank Martin – University of South Carolina
  • Bill Raftery – CBS Sports (former Seton Hall coach)
  • Kevin Willard – Seton Hall

The auction will be open from April 26 – May 8.

Bidding starts at $15,000 per package with a “buy now” bid of $24,000. The 11 winning bidders, along with their two guests, will enjoy an exclusive experience to network, dine and golf with their selected coach at one of the world’s top golf courses, Oakland Hills Country Club, host of six U.S. Opens, three PGA Championships and the 2004 Ryder Cup. The package also includes a one-night hotel stay for each guest in their own room at MotorCity Casino Hotel, an AAA Four-Diamond award winning hotel in Detroit.

The event is presented by the Ken & Kathy McCarter Foundation. Additional event partners include Beaumont Health, GiveSmart, MotorCity Casino Hotel, Nike, Oakland Hills Country Club, and Shinola.

All proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society. Funds raised will support the Society’s mission to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer.
