Alumni Showdown Tuesday at Comerica Park

Steve Yzerman to play in Alumni Showdown

DETROIT – Steve Yzerman will play in the 2013 Alumni Showdown between the Tornoto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings alumni squads.

The Red Wings announced Tuesday that Yzerman has committed to the team's roster for the game on Dec. 31 at Comerica Park. The game is part of the 2013 Hockeytown Winter Festival which preceeds the 2014 NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 1 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.

"Steve is one of the greatest Red Wings players ever," said Red Wings general manager Ken Holland in a news release. "His presence at the Alumni Showdown makes a great day even better."

Yzerman will be joined by former teammates Sergei Fedorov, Brendan Shanahan, Igor Larionov, Tomas Holmstrom, Chris Chelios, Larry Murphy and more.

Since retiring as a player in 2006, Yzerman has found work in the front offices of the Red Wings and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Right now, he is the Lightning general manager.

As rumors swirled last week about Yzerman's participation in the game, Holland said it would make it that much better if the captain were there.

"It's gonna be really special. It would just be a little more special, obviously, with Steve there," he said.
