Bruins beat Red Wings, 3-1, in preseason; what's ahead

DETROIT – It was a mix-up of Detroit Red Wings old and new Saturday night at Joe Louis Arena for their preseason game with the Boston Bruins.

Despite matching Boston's 23 shots, having a slight edge in faceoffs won (26-25) and getting more power play time, it was a giveaway and an empty-net goal which left Detroit on the wrong side of a 3-1 final score.

Jonas Gustavsson probably wants both goals back -- first an unassisted one from Dougie Hamilton who slipped it fivehole, then one Gustavsson himself batted away right to ex-Red Wing Ville Leino, who made no mistake putting it into a wide-open short side. It was one of 10 giveaways by the Red Wings on the night.

Detroit's goal was a shorthanded one from Landon Ferraro midway through the 2nd period, evening the score at 1-1. The 23-year-old forward found himself with the puck on an odd-man rush and chose to fire it high glove side on Tuukka Rask. Rask got a piece of it, but the puck dropped behind him and into the net.

But Leino's goal at 15:20 of the 3rd period was enough to seal it, and to give him the first star of the night. He is trying out for a spot with Boston -- maybe that helps.

With Gustavsson pulled, Brad Marchand made it 3-1 with less than a minute remaining in the game.

The Red Wings bench was full of new faces, a lot of whom logged decent chunks of ice time. Everyone in Mike Babcock's lineup (minus goalie Petr Mrazek) played at least 10 minutes.

Mattias Backman, a 21-year-old defenseman up from Grand Rapids, saw 17:24 minutes, most of which was spent paired up with Brian Lashoff. Defenseman Danny DeKeyser led the Wings with 23 minutes of ice time.

One of the more entertaining parts of the night was Luke Glendening's relentless tracking of Bruins' big man Milan Lucic, who made his preseason debut against the Wings. Lucic ended up with 6 penalty minutes -- slashing, high sticking and interference.
