Lightning beat Red Wings, 5-2, to force Game 7

Game 7 is Wednesday night in Tampa

DETROIT – The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Detroit Red Wings, 5-2, Monday night at Joe Louis Arena to force a Game 7.

Tyler Johnson got the Lightning on the board first when he busted in from the wing and shot it under the bar at 3:47 into the 1st period.

About 7 minutes later defenseman Jason Garrison caught the Red Wings forwards on a change and jumped up on the rush to give the Lightning a 4-on-3. Steven Stamkos found Garrison trailing and the defenseman was able to put it past Petr Mrazek, making it 2-0.

The Lightning never trailed in this game.

Johnson struck again midway through the 2nd period — his 6th goal of the series. He used his speed again to get behind the Red Wings defense and wristed it low glove side past Mrazek.

Tomas Tatar managed a Red Wings power play goal before the period was over. Detroit had failed to score on an 18-second two-man advantage but Tatar beat Ben Bishop before the man advantage expired.

Tampa entered the 3rd period with a 3-1 lead. It didn't last long as Tatar scored his second goal of the game less than 2 minutes into the period. He beat Bishop five-hole to put the Red Wings within a goal.

The Red Wings were well on their way to completing the comeback until Alex Killorn made it 4-2 at 14:51 of the 3rd period. He busted in quickly and deked Mrazek before going backhand top-shelf.

The Red Wings pulled Mrazek for the extra attacker with just more than three minutes remaining in regulation.

Cedric Paquette sent it all the way down the ice from his own zone and into the empty net with about a minute left to make it 5-2.

Game 7 will be played Wednesday night in Tampa. Â
