Sharks' Logan Couture fined for slew-footing Red Wings D Brendan Smith

DETROIT – San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture has been fined $5,000 by the NHL for slew-footing Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith during the game Thursday night.

Smith left the game with an upper-body injury. The incident happened at 16:03 of the 3rd period. Couture was assessed a tripping penalty while Smith was given a hooking penalty.

The NHL's Department of Player Safety announced the fine Friday afternoon. It's the maximum fine allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

The Red Wings went on to win the game, 3-2, thanks to a late goal by Luke Glendening.

Detroit's next game is 3 p.m. Saturday when they visit the Nashville Predators. Saturday's game will cap a six-game western road trip in which the Red Wings have gone 3-1-1. They will be back at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday for a game against the New York Rangers.
