Max Scherzer rejects Tigers long-term contract offer

No further in-season negotiations with the star pitcher

DETROIT – Starting pitcher Max Scherzer has reportedly rejected the Detroit Tigers long-term contract extension offer.

According to a team statement Sunday morning, Scherzer was offered a "substantial" offer that would have placed him among the highest paid pitchers in baseball.

The Tigers have said they would like to keep the Cy Young winner beyond the 2014 season. But with the rejection, the team says there will be no further in-season negotiation.

Scherzer's agent, Scott Boras, says that it was the Tigers, not his client, that rejected an offer.

Scherzer went 21-3 last season with an ERA of 2.90.  Â
