The University of Michigan is bringing top soccer teams Real Madrid and Manchester United to its 109,901-seat stadium on Aug. 2 as part of the Guinness International Champions Cup.
The announcement was made Friday. The tournament is being held at various venues across the U.S. starting July 2.
"We are excited about the opportunity to host two of soccer's premier clubs at Michigan Stadium," said Dave Brandon, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. "This is a rare chance for the Ann Arbor community and thousands of soccer fans in and around the southeast Michigan area to watch elite level professional soccer. This event will have a positive economic impact on the city of Ann Arbor and the state of Michigan and will continue to extend the Michigan brand internationally."
Michigan Stadium has been site for other major non-football events. The NHL's Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs played there Jan. 1.
