Michigan star guard Caris LeVert out for season with foot injury

LeVert led team in points, rebounds, assists

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan announced Sunday that star shooting guard Caris LeVert will miss the rest of the season after injuring his foot on the final play against Northwestern Saturday night.

Northwestern missed an open layup opportunity in the final seconds to give Michigan a 56-54 win at the Crisler Center. As the rest of the team celebrated the close win, LeVert stayed on the floor near the opposing basket.

The junior eventually got up and limped through the handshake lines before joining coach John Beilein for media interviews.

LeVert leads Michigan with 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. He's also the team leader in blocked shots and steals. The struggling Wolverines will now play their final 12 games without their top player on both ends.

LeVert was also considered a lock to go in the first round of the 2015 NBA draft. Though he shot just 42.1 percent from the field in his shortened junior season, his raw ability and athleticism still appeals to pro scouts.

Michigan is also battling a sickness throughout the locker room. Guard Spike Albrecht sat out Saturday's game with an upper respiratory infection and Michigan's top center Ricky Doyle played just 10 minutes because of breathing difficulty.

Beilein said shooter Zak Irvin was also playing through a sickness.

Michigan's next game is on the road against Rutgers Tuesday.
