Athletics beat Tigers, 4-3, with walkoff in 9th inning

Oakland Athletics tie ALDS at 2-2 with Detroit Tigers

OAKLAND – The Oakland Athletics waited until the 9th inning Wednesday night to take the lead and beat the Detroit Tigers, 4-3, on a Coco Crisp walkoff single.

The A's have forced a Game 5 with the Tigers in the AL division series.

Game 5 is Thursday night in Oakland.

1st inning:

The Tigers were unable to get on base in the top of the inning. Three went up to bat, three went out.

Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-out single. Scherzer's two strikeouts were enough to get him out of the inning.

2nd inning:

Andy Dirks hit a two-out double. Griffin popped up Jhonny Peralta to get the final out. Dirks stranded at 2nd.

Scherzer struck out Josh Reddick swinging. Josh Donaldson grounded out. Scherzer got another K to end the inning.

3rd inning:

Alex Avila offered a leadoff double. Omar Infante moved Avila to third with a sacrifice bunt. Austin Jackson's base hit scored Avila. Quintin Berry popped up. Miguel Cabrera grounded out to end the inning.

Scherzer got another strikeout, his 5th of the game. He popped up two other Athletics to get out of the inning.

4th inning:

Prince Fielder started the inning with a homerun to put the Tigers up 2-0. Delmon Young followed with a base hit. Dirks singled with no outs. Griffin got a double play off a Peralta grounder. Avila's fly ball to outfield ended the side.

Scherzer made quick work of the Athletics in the bottom of the 4th. Three up, three down. He threw just five pitches.

5th inning:

Infante was retired by Griffin and Jackson popped one out the left field. Berry popped it up.

Reddick struck out -- Scherzer's 6th K. He got his 7th K against the next batter, Josh Donaldson. Seth Smith walked with 2 outs. Derek Norris moved Smith to third with a base hit. Scherzer struck out Cliff Pennington to end the inning. That was his 8th K.

6th inning:

Griffin popped up Miguel Cabrera, but A's outfielders could not make the play. Cabrera went to first with no outs. Griffin was pulled after 85 pitches and 57 strikes. LH pitcher Jerry Blevins entered the game. Fielder hit into double play. Blevins got Delmon Young to ground out to end the side.

Coco Crisp opened bottom of the inning with lead off double. Fielder could not handle shot to 1st base. Crisp then took 3rd base on a wild pitch. Stephen Drew drove in Crisp and tried for third base but was thrown out by CF Jackson. Scherzer was done after 91 pitches, 63 strikes, 8 strikeouts and one run allowed. Octavio Dotel came in to pitch for the Tigers. Dotel struck out Cespedes but walked Moss with 2 outs. Dotel was done after 11 pitches. Phil Coke took the mound for the Tigers. Reddick flew out to center right to end the inning.

7th inning:

Dirks grounded to 2nd. Peralta was thrown out on a shot to third base. Donaldson rifled one back to 1st base for the out. Avila's grounder ended the side.

Al Alburquerque came in to pitch for the Tigers. Infante caught a liner to 2nd off Donaldson's bat for the first out. Alburquerque then struck out Smith -- the 10th strikeout for Tigers pitchers. Morris grounded out to 3rd base to end the inning.

8th inning:

Infante started the inning with a base hit. Jackson put down a sacrifice bunt to get Infante to 2nd base. Avisail Garcia scored Infante on a base hit. Cabrera popped up for the 2nd out. Fielder's 2-out base hit sent Garcia to 3rd base. Ryan Cook entered the game to pitch for the A's. Young grounded out to end the inning.

Joaquin Benoit entered to pitch for the Tigers. Pennington grounded out to 1st. Crisp flew out to center for the 2nd out. Drew lined one to center -- a 2-out single. Benoit then walked Cespedes. Moss struck out swinging to end the inning.

9th inning:

Dirks opened the inning with a liner to 2nd. Peralta grounded to short for the 2nd out. Avila struck out to end the inning.

Closer Jose Valverde took the mound for Detroit. Reddick opened the inning with a base hit. Donaldson shot one to the wall for a double. Reddick stopped at 3rd base. Smith doubled, sending both runner home to tie the game at 3-3. Pennington then struck out.

Coco Crisps walkoff single won it for the A's, 4-3
