Detroit's image slammed before Tigers World Series run

Forbes Magazine lists Detroit as America's most dangerous city, again, right before Tigers compete in World Series

DETROIT – On the eve of the Detroit Tigers World Series run, Forbes Magazine has released its annual list of America's most dangerous.

You guessed it, Detroit is No. 1 on the list, again. It would have been really nice if the already-beleaguered city could have enjoyed the glow and buzz of the Tigers victory for more than 5 minutes, but that wasn't possible.

"I think we get a lot of bad press, but I think that people are passionate about the city, passionate about the Tigers," said Tigers fan Russ Keberly, of Livonia.

It's difficult to dispute Forbes' numbers or that there are problems in the city of Detroit, but have they scared off visitors before they have arrived?

"I'm elated they've got the World Series coming to the city," said Dermot Jennings, of Toronto. "Good for the city and the fans. They can make this city one of the better places in America."

Detroit is not new to major sporting events. It has hosted a Super Bowl, the Grand Prix, the Final Four and multiple Stanley Cup Finals. Detroit police, Michigan State Police and Wayne County Sheriff's deputies are huddling up to refine plans for the World Series. They do know how to handle an event of this magnitude.

The Detroit Convention and Visitors Bureau will have signage up all over the area to direct out-of-towners. Metro Detroiters such as Marilyn Bachnak are refusing to let the lousy headline ruin the spirit.

"I have never been more excited in my life, actually," she said.

On the list, the No. 2 most violent city in America is St. Louis. A potential series between the Cardinals and Tigers would showcase teams from two tough towns.
