Rangers crush Tigers again Sunday afternoon

Detroit lost six of last seven games

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers (28-18) allowed 12 runs for the second straight game on Sunday and lost 12-4 to the Texas Rangers (25-25). It has been a brutal week for the Tigers, who after being swept in Cleveland came home and lost three of four to the Rangers by a combined score of 35-15.

Both offenses got off to fast starts on Sunday, but the Rangers blew the flood gates open in the fifth inning by scoring five runs and took an 8-2 lead.

Justin Verlander lasted just 5 1/3 innings, allowing six earned runs, the third straight start that he's given up five or more. His ERA ballooned to a season-high 4.04.

Colby Lewis settled down to pick up his fourth win of the season after allowing runs in both the first and second innings. He finished the game allowing just two runs in 5 2/3 innings while striking out two and walking five.

Victor Martinez was the lone bright spot for Detroit, picking up two hits and raising his league-leading average to .337.

Miguel Cabrera left the game with an apparent hamstring cramp after hitting a single in the seventh inning. Pitcher Joba Chamberlain also left early with an injury during the eighth inning.

Detroit will start a seven-game West Coast trip on Monday afternoon in Oakland.
