Tigers, Alex Avila agree to 1-year deal

Avila played in 102 games with Detroit during the 2013 season

DETROIT – The Tigers avoid arbitration with starting catcher Alex Avila.

The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with an option for 2015 with catcher Alex Avila, thus avoiding arbitration.

Avila saw action in 102 games with Detroit during the 2013 season, batting .227 (75x330) with 14 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs and 47 RBI. Following the All-Star break, he batted .303 (40x132) with nine doubles, five home runs, 26 RBI and an .876 OPS over 44 games.

In five seasons with the Tigers, Avila has batted .254 (385x1516) with 84 doubles, seven triples, 51 home runs and 222 RBI over 492 games.
