Tigers take 3-game lead over Yankees in ALCS with Game 3 win in Detroit

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers have taken a three-game lead in the American League Championship Series after beating the New York Yankees 2-1 Tuesday night in Detroit.

The Tigers are now one win away from the team's first trip to the World Series since 2006. Game 4 will be played at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Detroit.

Here is Game 3's inning-by-inning recap:

Pitching matchup: Yankees RH Phil Hughes (0-0, 1.35 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Justin Verlander (2-0, 0.56)

1st inning:

Brett Gardner went down early for the 1st out of the game. Ichiro Suzuki then fell victim to Justin Verlander's fastball, striking out swinging. Mark Teixeira popped up to left center. Quintin Berry made the catch to end the side, 1, 2, 3.

Austin Jackson grounded out on the first pitch. Berry singled to get on base. Miguel Cabrera flew out. Prince Fielder walked to give the Tigers runners at 1st and 2nd with two outs. Delmon Young flew out to right field to end the inning, stranding two on base.

2nd inning:

Robinson Cano grounded to short for the first out. Raul Ibanez also grounded out. Catcher Alex Avila ended the side by catching a foul ball off Russell Martin's bat.

Andy Dirks grounded out to start the side. Jhonny Peralta flew out to left for the 2nd out. Avila struck out to end the inning.

3rd inning:

Eric Chavez started the inning with a fly ball to center. Jackson made the catch for the first out. Curtis Granderson struck out swinging. Verlander got out of the inning, 1, 3, 3.

Omar Infante started the bottom of the 3rd by flying out to left. Hughes got out of the inning while stranding two runners.

4th inning:

Gardner gave Verlander his first out of the inning. Suzuki got on base but Cano grounded out to end the side.

Delmon Young started the inning with a solo homerun to get the Tigers on the board. Dirks then walked with no outs. Hughes was pulled due to an injury. David Phelps, RHP, took the mound for the Yankees with a man on 1st and no outs. Phelps got Peralta to fly out to center for out 1. Avila singled to right. Tigers had runners at 1st and 2nd with one out. Infante then popped up. Jackson grounded out to end the inning.

5th inning:

Ibanez started the inning with a fly out to center. Martin also flew out. Chavez popped up to end the side.

Berry led off with an infield base hit. Berry then stole 2nd base. Cabrera was up to bat with no outs and Berry on 2nd. Cabrera doubled to get Berry home. Prince Fielder was up with no outs and Cabrera on 2nd. Fielder grounded out. The Yankees intentionally walked Delmon Young. Dirks grounded and young was thrown out at 2nd, but Cabrera went to 3rd and Dirks was safe at 1st with 2 outs. Yankees changed pitchers -- RHP Cody Eppley took the mound. Peralta flew out to center to end the inning.

6th inning:

Verlander got Granderson to pop up for the first out. Eduardo Nunez grounded out. Gardner shot one right back to Verlander who threw to 1st to end the side.

Infante singled to left with 1 out. Tigers got two men on base with just one out. Yankess made another pitching change. LHP Boone Logan took the mound. Avisail Garcia loaded the bases for Miguel Cabrera, who hit into a double play to end the inning.

7th inning:

Ichiro Suzuki led off with a single. Teixeira flew out to left center. Cano struck out swinging on a Verlander fastball. Ibanez grounded out to 1st base to end the inning.

Prince Fielder popped up for the first out. Delmon Young struck out swinging. Dirks flew out to left to end the side.

8th inning:

Verlander got Russell Martin to ground out to 3rd. Cabrera threw him out at 1st. Chavez flew out to center for out No. 2. Verlander popped up Granderson to end the side.

Peralta was robbed of a single to left field. Gardner caught it on the run. Avila also flew out to left. Yankees changed pitchers again as RHP Joba Chamberlain entered the game with 2 outs. Infante flew out to center to end the inning.

9th inning:

Verlander took the mound. Nunez hit a solo homerun to get the Yankees a run. Gardner grounded out to give Verlander his first out of the inning. That was it for Verlander. Phil Coke came in to get the final two outs. He got Suzuki to ground out. Teixeira came to the plate with 2 outs. He got on with a single. Cano hit a bas hit to left. Runners were at 2nd and 1st with one out. Coke got Ibanez to strike out swinging for the final out.
