DETROIT – Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Max Scherzer is the 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner.
This is the first time he has won the award, and the second time in three years a Tigers pitcher has won the award (Justin Verlander in 2011).

Scherzer won his first 13 decisions and finished the season as the majors' only 20-game winner. He was also second in the majors in strikeouts (240). Scherzer has only one year remaining before he's a free agent. Scherzer went 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA and a MLB leading 0.97 WHIP in 2013.
The Cy Young Award has been given to the best pitcher in each respective league since 1967. From 1956-66, it was awarded to the single best pitcher in all of baseball -- named after Hall of Famer Cy Young, who died in 1955.
It was reported earlier this week that the Detroit Tigers have informed teams they will listen to trade offers for Max Scherzer.
The most valuable player awards will be announced Thursday.Â
