DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers have avoided arbitration by reaching a one-year, $15.525 million deal with 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer.

The 29-year old right-hander went 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA and 240 strikeouts in over 214 innings during the 2013 season. It is still unclear if the Tigers will sign Scherzer to a long-term contract. His agent, Scott Boras, prefers his clients to test the free agent market rather than sign extensions beforehand, but Scherzer has been open about his desire to stay in the Motor City.
