Porcello gave up a two-out run in the first inning after three Angels singled in a row. He was virtually unhittable throughout the next six innings, and finished the afternoon giving up just five hits and one walk en route to his second win of the season.
Detroit's offense benefitted from four Angels errors, including a play in the first inning that accounted for three of them. Ian Kinsler broke for second base just as Miguel Cabrera took ball four. Angels Catcher Hank Conger threw the ball into centerfield, where Mike Trout grabbed it and overthrew Conger, allowing Kinsler to score. Pitcher Hector Santiago then allowed Cabrera to move to second with a throwing error.
Andrew Romine led the offensive charge for the Tigers, going 2-2 with a walk and two stolen bases. Nick Castellanos drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth and the Tigers bullpen shut the door for the win. Joe Nathan picked up his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
The Tigers are now 9-6 and hold a half-game lead over the Kansas City Royals for first place in the AL Central as of 5:00 p.m. They will take on the division rival Chicago White Sox Monday night at 7:08 p.m. in Detroit.
