DETROIT - Rick Porcello's name wasn't called during the All-Star selection show on Sunday night, but there's still a chance to help the 25-year-old become the fourth member of the Tigers to make the American League roster this season.
Porcello has been one of the top pitchers in the AL this season, picking up 11 wins and posting a 3.53 ERA. As the All-Star rosters were finalized on Sunday, Porcello owned a 3.12 ERA and ranked in the top 10 for AL pitchers in wins, WHIP and WAR. Considering all the statistics, the right-hander has been one of the most valuable pitchers in the league.
The annual "final vote" is Porcello's last chance to make his first All-Star team, as five of the top remaining pitchers battle for the final spot.
Though Porcello leads all five of the competing pitchers in wins, two poor starts have inflated his ERA and allowed others to gain ground. If it weren't for two seven-run outings Porcello would own a 2.66 ERA, good for sixth in the AL.
Detroit has leaned heavily on Porcello this season with Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer struggling since April. While the two former Cy Young Award winners own a combined 4.99 ERA in that stretch, Porcello posted a much stronger 3.40.
Final voting will last until Thursday at 4 p.m. Fans can also help Porcello on social media by tweeting the hashtag #PickRick from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday.
As perhaps the most valuable pitcher on a first-place team, Porcello certainly deserves a chance to pitch in this year's midsummer classic. Use the link below to help vote Porcello into the game.
