Red Wings beat Coyotes 3-2 in SO

Zetterberg scores in SO to lift Wings past Coyotes

DETROIT – Henrik Zetterberg's highlight reel goal in the third round of the shootout gave the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 victory over the visiting Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night.

The win provided a pair of Red Wings milestones. Head coach Mike Babcock earned his 400th NHL victory, while goaltender Jimmy Howard recorded the 100th triumph of his career.

After Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk and Phoenix's Radim Vrbata traded goals in the sudden-death format, Zetterberg then ended things in round three, extending his stick to slide the puck past an out-of-position Smith.

With the game tied 1-1 through 40 minutes, the Coyotes jumped back in front early in the third period when Taylor Pyatt fired a shot that glanced off Howard's glove and into the net.

Johan Franzen drew the Red Wings even at the midway point of the frame, converting a slick Datsyuk feed for his team-best 17th goal.

Vrbata opened the scoring midway through the opening period, while Valtteri Filppula responded for the Red Wings in the final minute of the frame.

Detroit is now a perfect 13-0-0 in games in which Filppula scores.
