Detroit goalie Joey MacDonald to start game in Phoenix

The Red Wings said Howard's injury will be re-evaluated by the team's medical staff when they return to Detroit.

Meanwhile, Ty Conklin started Saturday night in Edmonton. Conklin allowed three goals on nine shots in the first period before being pulled. Coach Mike Babcock put goalie Joey MacDonald in his place.

MacDonald shined in the second period against the Oilers and ended the game with 22 saves on 23 shots. He gave the Red Wings a chance to win the game in a shootout. However, Detroit fell short, 5-4, for their first shootout loss of the season.

That ended a two-game winning streak for Detroit. The Red Wings (35-16-2) won the first two games of a four-game road trip that will end Monday night in Phoenix.

MacDonald will get the start against the Coyotes.

It will be the fourth meeting this season between the teams. Detroit took the first three -- the most recent on Jan. 19 at Jobbing.com Arena, 3-2.

The Coyotes (23-21-8) are tied for 11th place in the Western Conference with 54 points. They beat the San Jose Sharks 5-3 on Saturday night.

Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi scored his 300th career goal Saturday, and then scored one more for good measure and a hat trick which included a clutch shootout goal to keep the Wings alive. The 37-year-old is on a tear with 12 goals and 15 assists in 46 games with Detroit this season.

Patrick Eaves remains out of Detroit's lineup while his broken jaw heals. Danny Cleary will undergo cyst surgery after the road trip. The team said the cyst behind his left knee has bothered the winger.

The surgery may force Cleary to miss a game or two, the Red Wings said in a news release.

Puck drops at 8 p.m.

-- Joey MacDonald played in 15 games for the Red Wings last season to post a 5-5-3 starting record.
