DETROIT – Detroit Red Wings right winger Jordin Tootoo has been medically cleared to play.

Tootoo, who was signed as a free agent by Detroit in the 2012 offseason, has been out of the lineup with a shoulder injury, forcing him to miss the team's first three games of the season.

The gritty forward appeared in 42 regular season games with the Red Wings last season, during which he scored 3 goals and 5 assists and earned 78 penalty minutes.

The former Nashville Predator showed Detroit fans he is not afraid to drop the gloves.

It's not clear when or if Tootoo could return to Detroit's lineup. He was a healthy scratch at times last season.

The Red Wings play Thursday night against the Phoenix Coyotes in Detroit.
