Highlights
LADIES: Karen Chen, 17, surged ahead of her veteran rivals to lead after the short program. She's followed by past U.S. champions Ashley Wagner, Mirai Nagasu and Gracie Gold. Wagner and Gold have won the past five U.S. Championships, but Chen may be tough to beat. Her short program score set a record in the event.
MEN: Nathan Chen, 17, is the favorite to take the U.S. title with defending champion Adam Rippon out with an injury. Look for 2014 Olympian Jason Brown to compete well.
PAIRS: Ashley Cain and Timothy LeDuc are the surprise leaders in the pairs competition. They'll look to stay in front of Haven Denney/Brandon Frazier, Deanna Stellato/Nathan Bartholomay, Marissa Castelli/Mervin Tran and defending champions Tarah Kayne/Danny O’Shea.
DANCE: "Shib sibs" Maia and Alex Shibutani -- University of Michigan alums -- are the favorites followed by Madison Chock, of Novi, and Evan Bates, of Ann Arbor.
The U.S. Championships typically determine who will compete in the World Championships, which are scheduled for March 29 to April 2 in Helsinki, Finland.
