The teams started the game by exchanging quality chances, but it quickly became clear this game would not be a high-scoring one.

The Red Wings could not take advantage of Zdeno Chara's 2-minute boarding penalty late in the 1st period. Chara had hit Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith from behind, but his teammates killed off the penalty.

The Red Wings controlled most of the play in the 2nd period but couldn't get one past Tuukka Rask.

Bruins defenseman Torey Krug got called for holding Johan Franzen at 15:58 in the 2nd, putting the Red Wings on another power play. However, Boston killed it off, limiting Detroit's offensive threat.

The teams went into the 3rd period scoreless.

The Bruins got their first power play in the 3rd when Tomas Tatar got called for interference, but they couldn't capitalize on the man advantage either.

It stayed scoreless until 16:59 in the 3rd period when Datsyuk wristed one from the top of the circle past Rask to make it 1-0. Datsyuk had made a remarkable play near center ice where he reached back with one hand on his stick to pull it up and break into the Bruins zone where he shot it past Rask's glove side.

The Bruins pulled Rask for the extra attacker with just more than a minute to go in regulation, but the Wings held on to win and take a 1-0 series lead.

Boston outhit Detroit 34-26, but the Red Wings had the edge at the faceoff dot, 24-20.
