DETROIT -

The Detroit Red Wings have signed center Stephen Weiss to a 5-year contract worth $24.5 million, according to a report from TSN on Friday.

Weiss, a former Plymouth Whalers star, will fill the team's need for a center. The 30-year-old has spent his entire NHL career with the Florida Panthers. He only played 17 games this past season due to injury.

Prior to last season, Weiss strung together three seasons of 20 goals or more. He tallied a career-best 61 points with the Panthers in 2008-09.

Under the contract, Weiss will get $4.9 million a season, according to TSN.
