Report: Pistons owner to pursue Michigan State coach Tom Izzo

Pistons fired head coach Maurice Cheeks in February

DETROIT – Michigan State basketball head coach Tom Izzo could be the main target to fill the Detroit Pistons head coaching vacancy this off-season, according to a report in USA Today.

The Pistons fired head coach Maurice Cheeks midway through his first season in Detroit. Assistant coach John Loyer has taken over the team but is not expected to remain head coach past the 2014 season.

Izzo has been courted by the NBA before. Once in 2000, when he turned down the Atlanta Hawks, and again in 2010, when he turned down the Cleveland Cavaliers.
