DETROIT -

The Detroit Pistons offseason has given new life to the franchise and a fan base praying for a playoff birth.

With the hiring of Maurice Cheeks as head coach, the addition of All-Star forward Josh Smith in free agency and the return of fan favorite Chauncey Billups, the Pistons have a legitimate chance of grabbing a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

According to Vincent Goodwill of the Detroit News, the Pistons can be a lower-seeded playoff team this season.

"When you look at the Eastern Conference playoff picture, you have five playoff teams," Goodwill said. "Of course you have the Miami Heat, the Indiana Pacers, the Chicago Bulls, the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets."

The Pistons can easily find themselves in one of the final three spots if the team on the court looks as good as the team on paper.

"With their talent, experience and the athleticism and shooting they've added this year," Goodwill said. "There's no reason why they shouldn't be in prime position to make a playoff run."

With the Pistons seemingly done with offseason transactions, a winning season and potential playoff birth leaves the Detroit fan base with a sweet taste in their mouth.
