The last time the Red Wings and Pistons both missed the playoffs

Isiah Thomas and John Ogrodnick

DETROIT – It's been a while since both the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings missed the playoffs in the same year.

The last time it happened? The 1982-1983 season.

Unfortunately for Detroit sports fans, both teams are unlikely (an understatement) to make the playoffs this year.

The Pistons and Red Wings are not technically eliminated from the postseason yet, but it seems like only a matter of time.

The 1982 Detroit Pistons actually had some future star power, with soon-to-be Bad Boys Isiah Thomas, Vinnie Johnson and Bill Laimbeer.

The Pistons that year, playing at the Pontiac Silverdome, went 37-45, finishing 3rd in the NBA Central Division.

Kelly Tripucka lead the team that year, averaging 26.5 points per game, with Isiah Thomas in his second year averaging 22.9 points per game.

The 1982 Detroit Red Wings finished 21-44-15 with 57 points, landing 5th in the NHL Norris Division.

John Ogrodnick lead the team with 85 points, followed by Reed Larson (74), Danny Gare (61), while goalies Carrado Micalef and Greg Stefan split time in net.

The Red Wings would go on to draft Steve Yzerman in the 1983 draft.

It's been 34 years since both teams missed the playoffs, but hey, that's a pretty decent streak! Here are some other things that happened in 1983:

  • The McDonald's Chicken McNugget was rolled out nationwide.
  • The D.A.R.E. program was established.
  • Michael Jackson introduced the Moonwalk.
  • Hooters launched its first restaurant in Clearwater, Florida.
  • AOL was founded, but was called Control Video Corporation at the time.
  • The Disney Channel launched.
