The very confusing Detroit Tigers, by the numbers

Tigers aren't dead just yet

DETROIT – Just when you think the Detroit Tigers are finished - they come roaring back.

The Tigers had fallen below the .500 mark just last week, causing many to start planning the trade deadline sell off so many fans expect to see.

Instead, the Tigers have won four straight games and are just 2.5 games behind the division leads Twins, and only 1.5 games back of a wild card spot.

It's safe to say that even in June (and yes, it is still early) we still have no clue what this Tigers team really is.

Let's take a look at their American League numbers through almost 60 games:

Batting:

  • 10th in total hits (471)
  • 3rd in total doubles (102)
  • 2nd in total triples (13)
  • 8th in total home runs (71)
  • 3rd in total runs batting in (266)
  • 6th in On Base Percentage (.332)
  • 4th in slugging percentage (.430)
  • 2nd in walks drawn (218)
  • 2nd in fly ball outs (843)

Pitching:

  • 14th in ERA (4.62)
  • 10th in strikeouts (425)
  • 8th in walks (186)
  • 6th in home runs allowed (73)
  • 14th in OBP (.336)
  • 14th in WHIP (1.43)

The numbers paint a very clear picture of the team's issues - PITCHING. The Tigers are one of the best offensive teams in the American League, but their pitching staff can't keep up.

It won't help that Justin Verlander is getting an MRI after leaving Sunday's game with a groin injury.

The Tigers bullpen has been better as of late, with Alex Wilson and Justin Wilson holding down the late innings.

The MLB Trade Deadline is July 31 - and the Tigers are not a clear seller or buyer at this point.
