Tigers 2014 Opening Day events in Detroit

DETROIT – You could say Opening Day is like an unofficial Detroit holiday. Many people play hooky from work, some even pull their kids out of school to celebrate the start of the baseball season.

There's many events to commemorate the occasion starting with a special prayer the night before.

"We will gather here at 11:30 and we'll have a few readings and sing a few hymns and then we will pray for our Tiger team," said Father Steven Kelly of St. John's Episcopal Church. " We'll pray that God will bless them with health and a good season."

Father Kelly has hosted "Pray for the Tigers" for more than a decade. The night before Opening Day he invites Tigers fans to pray for the team and for good reason.

"We do believe we are to love our neighbors as ourselves and the Detroit Tigers are our neighbors!" said Kelly.

The church sits in the shadow of Comerica Park. As you plan what you'll be doing, why not root for your team and give to a good cause? The Red Cross is hosting an Opening Day party at the Atheneum  Hotel. Part of the proceeds from ticket sales go straight to the non-profit.

"We're doing a number of activities from having a silent auction of baseball memorabilia, food, there'll be drink, socializing and just an all-around good time," said Red Cross spokesman, Laforice Nealy.

And if you have a love for art, why not start out at the Opening Day Open House at the Detroit Center. You can enjoy ballpark food and watch the game on the big screen inside for free!

"Given the way of how cold it's been this year I think it's a bit safer if you don't have a ticket to the game than maybe venturing down," said Detroit Center spokesman, Mike Morland.

One of the biggest parties of the season is the 97.1 The Ticket Opening Day Block Party. Join other Tiger fans and meet radio personalities like Stoney and Bill in person before the game.

"A lot of great music, a lot of great drinks! I mean let's face it, people are gonna be...They're gonna get their party on! Ya think?" said Stoney and Bill.

And there's no need to worry about transportation if you plan on enjoying a few drinks, just take the party bus. It picks up at two different locations and drops you off at several downtown opening day parties. You can start the party early on board the luxury motor coach.
