Tigers release SS Alex Gonzalez, recall INF Danny Worth

Gonzalez had walk-off hit Opening Day

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers have released shortstop Alex Gonzalez and recalled infielder Danny Worth from AAA Toledo.

Gonzalez played in just nine of Detroit's first 14 games, hitting .167 with two RBI. Though the 37-year-old veteran had the walk-off RBI single that gave the Tigers an Opening Day victory, he has been benched in favor of 28-year-old Andrew Romine in Detroit's last four games.

The Tigers acquired Gonzalez from the Baltimore Orioles in late March when it became clear that projected starting shortstop Jose Iglesias would miss most of the season with stress fractures in both shins. Detroit sent utility infielder Steve Lombardozzi to Baltimore in the deal.

Worth, who has bounced from Toledo to Detroit throughout his seven-year career, was off to a hot start with the Mud Hens, hitting .308 with five doubles in 14 games. He has a career .242 average with two homeruns and 14 RBI with the Tigers.
