After the Tigers 6-3 loss to the Twins Tuesday night, Jim Leyland announced that left- hander, Jose Alvarez was called up and Phil Coke was headed down I-75 to play for the Toledo Mud Hens.
Coke has struggled with command this season, which has resulted in an 0-5 record and 5.00 ERA. Jim Leyland was firm when saying, "We're going to bring Coke back up, before anybody gets too excited." He went on to say, "We do want him to go down there and work on command for these two weeks and see if he can locate the ball a little bit better."
Coke who is never afraid of a microphone fielded questions in the clubhouse and responded with his heart on his sleeve, "It would definitely be handling business the way it should be handled, not failing in my job" said Coke when asked what he needed to work on while he's with the Mud Hens. He went on to say, "I'm fully expecting to be back here very soon."
Coke, a six year veteran was obviously not pleased with the decision, but Leyland says that's to be expected, "I don't blame people for being upset, I understand that totally, but you also have to understand the purpose that you're going down there for so you get accomplished what we're trying to get accomplished and I think Cokie will."
