Visitors near and far flock to NAIAS

One visitor says "You can skip other shows, but you can't skip Detroit"

DETROIT – Industry and media preview week continued Thursday at the North American International Auto Show as crowds of people rushed through Detroit's Cobo Center to get a peak at the vehicles.

While some of the high-end automakers drew expected crowds, companies with a variety of vehicles seemed to steal the attention. Visitors to the auto show -- who were mostly taking the chance to shop around -- wanted to see what
affordable options are available. It was clear they wanted the variety companies, such as Chevrolet and Ford, have to offer.

"It's not really about getting a sneak peak, really, it's about all the different vehicles, for me at least. Having all the companies under one roof. You get an idea of what everyone has to offer, in one visit," said Dan Phillips, of Indiana.

Phillips was in town with colleagues from an auto supplier back home. He was wandering through the Chevrolet display as the 2014 Silverado caught his eye.

"The Chevy trucks are very cool. But I can turn around and head over to Ford and maybe change my mind about which I like better," he said, laughing.

Of course, most visitors here this week have some sort of investment in a certain automaker. That means there was a lot of spying going on. Engineers crouching to see what's under a vehicle's body or engine has been a common site.

They've been snapping photos and taking notes. The show is part of the job for many of the industry members.

"It's fun. You see people you've worked with before. People you've seen at other shows. It never gets old," said one visitor.

The North American International Auto Show officially opens to the public this weekend. If this week's preview is any indication of public attendance, Cobo Center should be packed come Saturday. It's the Motor City, after all.

"You can skip other shows, but you can't skip Detroit," said one visitor.
