Workers started removing and replacing the road surface, repairing joints and cracks, repairing drainage structures, replacing burbs and updating sidewalks to be Americans Disabilities Act compliant.

The project began at 7 p.m. Monday. It is expected to last into late October. Work will be suspended during the weekend of Aug. 18-20.

Traffic impact

As part of the preparation for the resurfacing project, joint and crack repairs will be prepared overnight.

Starting Monday, eastbound and westbound 8 Mile Road will have nightly lane closures with two lanes open from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday morning.

During the overnight work, the westbound 8 Mile Road Service Drive will be closed to through traffic at Woodward Avenue, but there will be access to northbound Woodward Avenue.

The northbound Southfield Freeway ramp to eastbound 8 Mile Road will be closed.

Safety details

The resurfacing project includes repairs to the deteriorated roadway to make it safer and improve conditions for drivers.

The cleaning and repair of draining structures will help with water removal from the roadway to get rid of standing water and slippery conditions in the winter.

The new ADA-compliant sidewalks will make it safer for walkers.

Crews will work during nights and weekends to minimize the impact on traffic, and lighter traffic makes for a safer work zone. Lights will be added to the works zone for crews at night.
