CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The extreme heat across metro Detroit caused a portion of Interstate 275 to buckle.
It happened near the Ford Road off ramp in Canton Township on Thursday.
"In the heat wave that we're having the pavement is expanding. Those joints that we put in there have reached their maximum. When that occurs the pavement has nowhere to go, but to go up," said Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman Rob Morosi.
There is no way to predict when the pavement will buckle.
"I think it really depends on several factors. One is the heat of the day. Two is the duration of the heat. As you know, we've been about 90 degrees for several days now. Another factor is the ages of the pavement and of course the traffic volumes," said Morosi.
Over the last few days, there have also been several reports of roads buckling across the Midwest including Wisconsin and Illinois.
As the heat wave continues, drivers are asked to proceed with caution.
