Other News: Vegas Hall Of Fame Gets New Members

Cannery Adds Poker Tables

UPDATED: 10:35 a.m. EDT September 29, 2003

Singers and entertainers both famous and infamous fill out the list of the new inductees to the Casino Legends Hall of Fame. The honorees include former Four Seasons leader Frankie Valli, actress Connie Stevens, comedian Jack Carter, longtime variety staple Breck Wall, impressionist Bill Acosta, and that "only-in-Vegas" staple Cook E. Jarr.

The ceremony will be hosted by Clint Holmes at the Tropicana on Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. in the Tiffany Theater.

If you're looking for some low-limit poker games, you may want to head out to the Cannery, the new-ish locals' hotel on the north side of town. It's adding $2/$4 and $4/$8 Texas Hold'em tables and may throw in some Omaha or Stud games if there is enough demand.

A full-fledged poker room is being developed, but for now the poker tables will be in the main casino, so it will be a great place to go and watch if you can't wait for the 9,000th rerun of the World Series of Poker championships on cable.

As if you needed an excuse to rent a car in Vegas, it just got a little more expensive to take a cab. The Taxicab Authority has approved a 20-cent increase in the "drop" fee (the charge that shows on the meter when you get in), up to $3. The increase is designed to make up for the hit companies and drivers have taken over high gas prices, although don't expect it to go away if gas prices go down. The $1.80 per mile charge stays the same, as does the $1.20 surcharge for airport runs. The fees apply to all cab companies in Las Vegas.

Mandalay Bay has announced the name for its new 1,122-suite tower that practically begs for an Abbott and Costello style sketch:

Abbott: Hey did you hear they picked a new name for the new hotel at Mandalay Bay?
Costello: Really? What is it?
Abbott: THE hotel.
Costello: Right, the hotel at Mandalay Bay.
Abbott: Exactly.
Costello: So what's it called?
Abbott: THE hotel at Mandaly Bay.

And so on and so forth. THE hotel at Mandalay Bay (no, I'm not joking) is currently scheduled to open IN late December 2003 AND will feature A separate check-in area, restaurants, spa AND more. When THE hotel opens, we'll bring you THE new review.
