Tips For Travel With Pets

POSTED: Friday, May 21, 2004

More than two-thirds of pet owners travel with their animals, according to the American Animal Hospital Association.

As the summer travel season starts, retailer PETCO offered tips for people who want to take their dogs and cats along on their adventures.

Do you plan to take your pets on your summer vacation?

First, the store says to make sure your pets' shots are current, and to check with a veterinarian before giving any drugs.

If you're flying, taking a bus or using any company for travel, you should call ahead to see what fees or requirements are added for pets.

If you're driving, the company says that animals should be in a carrier because having them loose can be distracting. Dogs that are too big for a carrier in the car should be strapped into seatbelt-type harnesses.

For air travel, remember that smaller animals can be placed in carriers under seats on some airlines. Larger animals go in the cargo area. Direct flights are easiest in both cases, for both pets and people.

Pets don't only have special needs when you're getting from one place to another; they also need care once you arrive. Having familiar items -- toys, food dishes, bedding -- can help make them feel at home. Maintaining the same diet as usual is also important.

You can call ahead to check the policies of any hotels you might stay at, but staying in someone's home has other considerations. Make sure your hosts do not have allergies. Also, get a new tag for your pet that lists the local address and phone number.

If you can't take an animal along, the best place to leave it is at home with a trustworthy caretaker. If not, a reputable kennel should be fine.
