Metro Detroit Clearing Snow After Storm

Local 4Casters Say Severe Weather Alert Day Over

POSTED: Monday, February 8, 2010
UPDATED: 8:01 pm EST February 10, 2010

Metro Detroit is digging its way out of a snowstorm that swept through the area Tuesday and Wednesday.

Local 4Casters said the heaviest bands of snow crossed the area north of Interstate 94. Early snow totals for Oakland County included Beverly Hills with 8.8 inches, New Hudson with 8.2 inches and Holly with 7.8 inches.

In Wayne County, Garden City got roughly 8.5 inches of snow, while Romulus racked up 6.5 inches, Detroit got 5 inches and Taylor got 4 inches.

More than 600 schools in southeast Michigan declared a snow day Wednesday. Wednesday was supposed to be a statewide count day, but because of how many schools were closed it was rescheduled for Thursday.

Plows started rolling around the clock Tuesday and continued to clear streets late into Wednesday evening.

In Detroit, some residents said they were frustrated with the lack attention residential side streets were getting from plows.

Mario Campos said he’s had to hand shovel his southwest neighborhood for the past 40 years.

“I’ve never seen a plow and I’ve lived here practically my whole life. I’ve never seen a plow come down this street,” Campos said.

The Detroit Department of Public Works said if the snowfall inch total reaches 6 inches, it’s part of their policy to weigh whether it is cost-effective to hire contractors to plow residential streets.

The DPW said with such a tight budget this year, and the snow being fluffy and easily packed down, they still haven’t made a decision on whether to hire contractors.

Campos said the city’s policy is annoying, but that shoveling his neighborhood is something he’s still willing to do for the safety of himself and his neighbors.

“I don’t mind it. You get used to it,” he said.

Some young people were a bit happier about the snowy driveways.

Gregory Hicks and Jazmin Lewis, both 15, took to the neighborhood offering their shoveling services for $5 a job.

“We didn’t have nothing to do, so we did this,” Hicks said. “We’re just trying to make some money.”

Lewis said the promise of some extra cash and helping out the community is what keeps her going.

“After a while your body starts to get used to it, but, yes, it’s cold,” she said.

The two said they would use their snow-shoveling profits on clothes and school supplies.

AAA spokeswoman Nancy Cain said their road crews were out in full force helping stranded drivers during the storm.

“We had 4,200 since yesterday morning. We’ve been very busy,” Cain told Local 4 Wednesday. “It’s not a record but certainly it was one of the busiest days and the busiest days this season.”

Flights Wednesday between Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Washington; New York; Boston; Hartford, Conn.; and Providence, R.I., were canceled for the day as the storm pounded the Eastern seaboard.

"If you're going east, you're not going east," Detroit Metro spokesman Scott Wintner said.
