DETROIT -

The afternoon in Detroit will be a wet one, but the rain is vital.

Drivers and students will have a sloppy ride home through puddles and rain-slickened roads.  Temps will be in the 40s.  Even after sunset, all of Southeast Michigan will be above freezing.

Therefore conditions will be damp, not icy, the rest of Thursday.

Travelers driving north of Saginaw or close to Lake Michigan or Chicago will deal with rain changing to snow the farther west or north they go.  Remember to take the weather with you.  JustWeather.com and 4 Live Radar are here for you because they are configured for your smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

When winds switch and blow from the northwest by 2am, Friday, temperatures will fall to or just below freezing and scattered rain showers will switch to scattered snow showers.

If streets, sidewalks, balconies or patios are wet by the middle of Friday morning's commute, there is a chance of those surfaces becoming icy or slushy if left untreated.  Snow accumulations will not be high, only a trace to an inch by Friday Afternoon (up to 2 inches in Port Huron).

High wind speeds and wind gusts will be major factors Friday.

Damaging winds may cause power outages and bring down weak trees, tree branches or power lines.
