Becoming dangerously cold, blustery Valentine's Day afternoon

Wind chills approach -30

DETROIT – Happy Valentine's Day! It will turn into one of Detroit's coldest on record but not before slippery conditions in the morning.

A WIND CHILL WARNING will be in effect for Genesee, Lapeer, Livingtson, Macomb, Oakland, Sanilac and St. Clair Counties from 5pm ET, Saturday to 12 noon ET, Sunday.

A WIND CHILL WARNING will be in effect for Lenawee, Monroe, Washtenaw and Wayne Counties from 9pm ET, Saturday to 12 noon ET, Sunday.

The snow becomes more scattered and temperatures fall as a cold front moves beyond the region. The mercury descends from the upper teens midday to the single digits by sunset (6:04pm ET).

Families will need to pack on the layers with each passing hour. Wind speeds pick up and make wind chills crater in the evening. It will feel like its -15 before dinner and near -20 or -30 afterward.

Saturday night will be bitterly, dangerously cold. It will be a good idea for neighbors to check on each other to make sure they are staying warm and safe. People must be safe when using space heaters, candles or fireplaces. Overnight lows will test Detroit's Sunday's record low or -10 set back in 1875. Many low temps will be near that mark or lower with wind chills testing areas below -30 or -35.

Sunday will be sunnier but remain hazardously cold and blustery. A 10 to 25 mph northwest wind will stifle temps; keeping them below 5 degrees for a high. Wind chills will be below zero all day.

Monday's morning low of -9 from 1904 will be challenged. The day will be partly sunny with pre-dawn temps in the negative numbers and afternoon highs in the teens.

Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with temperatures in the 20s. This day and Wednesday may be the warmest of the week. More snow showers will fall Wednesday, then temps decrease for the rest of the work week.
