DETROIT – The Detroit Department of Public Works utilizes a three-level system during winter weather events and wants residents to know about snow removal policies.
The city has 673 miles of major streets and 1884 miles of residential streets that must be made safe during the winter months. The city will have more than 50 trucks on the streets.

When three of less inches of snow falls, DPW crews will salt only major thoroughfares.
When three to six inches of snow falls, DPW crews will plow and/or salt major thoroughfares.
When more than six inches of snow falls, DPW crews will plow and salt major thoroughfares.
For storms where more than six inches of snow falls, the city may utilize contractors to plow residential streets depending on the characteristics of the snow accumulation, prevailing temperatures and forecasts.
Parking restrictions and requirements of citizens
On streets that are identified through signage as snow emergency routes, the city may restrict or prohibit parking for the purpose of plowing.
Snow emergency routes are first priority for snow removal and are marked by red and white signs.
In extreme weather, the city may declare a snow emergency, which allows police to ticket and tow illegally parked vehicles.
Residents and businesses are reminded that they are responsible for maintaining their sidewalks in a manner that makes it safe for pedestrians. Snow removal companies and property owners are prohibited from putting snow from their property onto public roadways.
