DETROIT – Snow arrives Sunday followed by sunshine Monday. 1 to 3 inches is possible for the first day of March, but temps will go above freezing during its first week.

Sunday morning will be snowy and cold. Temps will be in the middle and low teens as light and, at times, moderate snow showers fall across Detroit and Southeast Michigan. The heavier snow will be in areas south of I-94, especially in Lenawee and Monroe Counties. All of Southeast Michigan will become slippery and treacherous through the breakfast hour and as families travel to and from morning services. Roads and sidewalks will be snowy and slushy.

The Motor City area will be north of the heart of the winter storm affecting it Sunday afternoon. The heaviest snow with associated alerts will be in the central and southern Ohio Valley. Midday snow in Detroit and Southeast Michigan slowly becomes lighter and more scattered as the affiliated storm glides south and east of Michigan. Temps will rise to the upper 20s. A few rounds of scattered snow showers will dot the landscape from 3pm to 8pm and keep drivers on their toes.

Snow ends Sunday evening with temperatures in the low 20s. When the snowfall ends completely, 1 to 3 inches will have fallen with 2 to 3 inches in Lenawee and Monroe Counties and 1 to 2 inches in Detroit and Washtenaw and Wayne Counties. Southern portions of Livingston, Oakland and Macomb Counties will receive around 1 or 2 inches of snow, too. The rest of the region, including Genesee, Lapeer, Sanilac and St. Clair Counties will get around an inch of new snow by Sunday night.

Overnight lows will fall to the middle and low teens as skies clear.

Monday will be mostly sunny and not as cold. Highs will be near 30 degrees. It will be a more weather-friendly day for outdoor recess and walking to class.

Tuesday gets interesting, again. Another storm moves in from the west, but cold and warm air will be integral to the appearance of snow, rain, ice or all three simultaneously. For now, the day will begin with temps in the teens and light snow. Flakes mix with sleet as temps rise during lunchtime. Enough warmth at the ground and within the storm will mean an afternoon of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain. Highs will be near 35. As the Local4Casters analyze the latest computer models, a more precise forecast will unfold.

Wednesday and the rest of the week will be colder. Temps will be near 30 degrees during the day on Wednesday with scattered flurries and light snow. Thursday and Friday will be sunnier but more frigid. Morning temps will be in the single digits. Afternoon highs will be near 20 or 25 degrees.
