DETROIT – Happy New Year! Snow is on the way just in time for the "D-Drop" in Campus Martius for New Year's Eve. Tuesday evening will be cloudy, frigid and mostly dry for Detroit and all of Southeast Michigan. Party-goers and families going to services will need hand- and toe-warmers. Temps will be in the teens, and wind chills will be near zero much of the night.
Snow will arrive from the west by midnight and for all of New Year's Day, Wednesday. The snow will be fluffy and easily blown around because of the cold, dry air. It will be light to moderate, but because snow will fall constantly all day and into Thursday, January 2nd accumulations will be significant.
A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for Lenawee, Monroe, Washtenaw and Wayne Counties from 7am, Wednesday, to 4am, Thursday.
By the end of Wednesday afternoon, communities south of 8 Mile Road, including the City of Detroit, will receive 4 to 6 inches of snow. 2 to 4 inches will fall between I-69 and 8 Mile Road. 2 inches will fall along I-69 and in the Thumb.
1 to 3 inches of additional snow will fall from Wednesday night to the end of Thursday.
Reinforcing cold air will move in Thursday and Friday and keep all of southern Michigan in the deep freeze with highs in the teens and lows near zero. Wind chills will be below zero at night and in the morning.
Saturday and Sunday will have highs in the 20s and low 30s. More snow showers will fall Sunday.
