Forecast: Oppressive night ahead in metro Detroit

Scattered storms are possible, too

DETROIT – It's going to be an oppressively warm and muggy night ahead, and thunderstorms are possible as a strong cold front approaches.

We really need some rain right now, so hopefully we get some soakers, although I'm concerned that the activity will be scattered and some of us won't get a drop. Keep your fingers crossed. Lows near 70 -- although you folks north of I-69 could see temps quickly drop well down into the 60s late at night behind that front.

A sharply cooler and drier air mass will overspread the area on Wednesday, with afternoon temperatures probably only rising into the mid 70s under partly cloudy skies, as a north wind at 10 to 15 mph develops. Those of you south of Lake Huron will be even chillier, as you get the lake-cooled air.

Mostly clear Wednesday night, with lows in the mid 50s.

Mostly sunny Thursday, with highs in the mid to upper 70s. Mostly clear Thursday night, with lows in the mid 50s.

Mostly sunny on Friday, with highs in the low 80s.

The Saturday forecast is looking less promising than it did yesterday, when it looked as if rain would hold off until late afternoon or evening. The models don't have a great handle on this so, if you have outdoor plans, I suggest waiting a couple of days until I can get a better handle on things. At this point, we have to at least consider a chance of showers and thunderstorms during the day. Highs in the upper 70s, with rain chances also Saturday night.

Sunday features another chance of showers and thunderstorms (same weather system and same uncertainty as discussed above in the Saturday forecast). Highs in the upper 70s.

Showers likely Sunday night, with lows near 60.

Cloudy with showers likely on Monday, with highs in the low 70s.

Partly cloudy on Tuesday, with highs near 70.
