Forecast: Rain on the way to metro Detroit

Plus, a change to the weekend forecast

DETROIT – This is Michigan Severe Weather Awareness Week, and it's a really good week to plan and prepare since we won't see any severe weather.

One thing I want to mention today is that a lot of people drop their guard when they go up north. Put simply, many people think that tornadoes don't happen in northern Michigan. Yes, it's true that they don't get as many tornadoes up state as we do down here in the south, but you need to know that, since modern tornado statistics started in 1950, EVERY SINGLE COUNTY IN MICHIGAN HAS BEEN HIT BY AT LEAST ONE TORNADO.

So remember your tornado safety rules even when you're up north, and also remember that you can take your NOAA Weather Radio with you: it can be programmed to alert you to warnings for any county in the nation, let alone in the State of Michigan.

Alright, onto the forecast:

Clouds will be on the increase tonight, but the night should be dry. Lows near 40°, with a light east wind.

Thursday's sunrise is at 6:51 AM, and Thursday's sunset is at 8:16 PM.

Scattered light showers will dot the landscape on Thursday, but don't expect anything violent. Highs in the mid to upper 50s. East wind at 5 to 10 mph.

Showers diminish Thursday night, with lows in the mid to upper 40s.

Friday is shaping up to be an awesome day, with partly cloudy (maybe even mostly sunny) skies, and highs approaching 70° in some areas!

Mostly clear Friday night, with lows in the upper 40s.

Mostly sunny on Saturday – another great weekend day – with highs in the mid 60s.

Increasing clouds later Saturday night, with lows near 40°.

Sunday is where I need to make a change to the forecast. Today's computer models, including all three of the main long term models I saw (the ECMWF, GFS, and CMC) now accelerate the weather pattern from what I saw on previous days and bring rain into the area. The only question is timing: the GFS is quickest and brings in the rain during the morning, while the CMC is slowest and actually starts the day with some sun and then bring in rain late in the day. The ECMWF is in the middle.

Obviously, I'm not able to get specific on timing with differences like this in the models, so just "stay tuned" and I'll keep you updated (obviously, this forecast has important ramifications on Sunday's Tiger game against the White Sox). Highs Sunday in the upper 50s, and it's going to become windy.

Showers continue Sunday night, with lows in the upper 40s.

More rain moves in on Monday, with highs in the upper 50s to near 60°, with wind increasing by mid-to-late afternoon.

Partly cloudy Monday night, with lows near 40°.

Partly cloudy and windy on Tuesday, with some mid-to-late afternoon showers possible. Highs in the mid 50s.

Partly cloudy Tuesday night, with lows in the mid to upper 30s.

Partly cloudy and still windy on Wednesday, with a few showers possible. Highs in the mid 50s.
