Forecast: Showers on the way to metro Detroit

But so is a nice warm-up!

DETROIT – Today's sunshine and moderate temperatures were welcomed by one group of Metro Detroiters in particular: The Detroit Goodfellows!

The Monday after Thanksgiving has been Goodfellow Sales Day since the "Old Newsboys" started selling these papers way back in 1914. What's so special about these papers? As the only Detroit media person who is a member of the Goodfellows, I'll be happy to share the story with you! Every year, the Goodfellows delivers a package to each of the 34,000 poorest children in Detroit, and these packages are really something: each child will receive clothes (including much-needed socks and underwear), a dental hygiene kit, a toy, books, candy, a Detroit Public Library Card, etc. For those kids who have nothing, these packages mean everything.

Just as important is that the Goodfellows has no paid staff, no overhead, and no marketing or advertising expenses: It is a 100 percent volunteer organization. Some organizations tell you that, perhaps, 70% of your donation goes to the cause, while 30 percent goes to administrative and marketing costs. Not with the Goodfellows: Every single penny donated to us goes directly toward the purchase of those holiday packages. Every penny.

If you want to contribute and make sure that there's "No Kiddie Without a Christmas" (our official slogan), you can make a check out to "Detroit Goodfellows" and send it to me here at WDIV -- I'll make sure it gets to the right place.

You never know who you're going to help. In fact, years after I started selling Goodfellow papers, I casually mentioned this to my mother, who then told me that SHE received Goodfellow packages when she was a child. Her father, the grandfather I never knew, died when she was seven years old, and her family was dirt poor. I'm sure that those Goodfellow packages we deliver this year will mean as much to the kids receiving them as my mother told me they meant to her seventy years ago.

Weather forecast:

Alright, as buoyed as my spirits are today on Goodfellow Sales Day, they get an additional boost from the forecast. Once we get toward the end of the week, you'll have some great weather to do some holiday shopping or get those Christmas lights up.

Tonight will feature increasing clouds, and only the small chance for a sprinkle or isolated light shower. Lows in the mid to upper 30s (2-3° Celsius for our Canadian neighbors), but with temperatures rising to near 40° (5° Celsius) by the time you leave for work or take the kids to school tomorrow. East-northeast wind at 5 to 10 mph.

Cloudy with some possible drizzle to start our day on Tuesday, with a band of light showers crossing the area between mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Will a little luck, some of you in the western suburbs may even catch a hint of sun just before the sun goes down. Highs in the upper 40s (9° Celsius). Southwest wind at 10 to 15 mph. Tuesday's sunrise is at 7:42 AM, and Tuesday's sunset is at 5:02 PM.

Mostly cloudy Tuesday night, with lows in the low 30s.

Mostly cloudy on Wednesday with scattered rain and show possible. Highs temps well above freezing near 40° (5° Celsius) means that we shouldn't have to worry about any snow accumulation or ice on the roads.

However, temperatures dropping below freezing Wednesday night could produce some icy spots if road dampness doesn't evaporate quickly enough. Fortunately, the balance of the night will be dry, with lows near 30° (-1° Celsius).

Partly cloudy on Thursday, with highs in the mid 40s (6° Celsius).

Mostly clear Thursday night, with lows near 30° (-1° Celsius).

Then get ready for a mostly sunny stretch Friday through possibly even next Monday, with highs in the mid to upper 40s on Friday (8° Celsius), near 50° (10° Celsius) on Saturday, and mid to upper 40s (8° Celsius) on Sunday and Monday. Overnight lows should average in the low 30s (0° Celsius). As I mentioned above, this coming weekend looks like a good one to get some holiday shopping done, or get those Christmas lights up if you haven't done so yet.
