Forecast: Thunderstorms not our only threat in metro Detroit

Wind Advisory issued for Friday

DETROIT – A Tornado Watch that was in effect for Lenawee, Washtenaw, Livingston, Monroe, Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties has expired.

Tornado warnings for Lenawee and Washtenaw counties have also expired. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Wayne County also has expired.

The warm front that was supposed to move through the area midday Thursday was slowed by the hard-to-budge cool airmass over us, the rain showers we've had most of the day, as well as the cool Great Lakes.

But it IS starting to move north, and you'll notice temperatures soaring into the 60s once it passes by. Scattered thunderstorms are possible this evening into the overnight hours, but I think that our overall severe weather threat is diminishing.

That does not mean that severe weather is not possible. It means that it's less likely than yesterday's thinking. If storms this evening over our area are able to develop violent, sustained updrafts that extend high up into the atmosphere, then they'll have a very favorable wind field aloft to work with. The question is one of stability, and if we'll be able to get those violent updrafts.

So I strongly suggest keeping abreast of the latest weather information -- either from us on Local 4, from ClickOnDetroit.com, from the awesome radar on our free weather app that you can download from the app store, or from your NOAA Weather Radio.
