Frigid night ahead as temps begin to drop in Metro Detroit

Bone-chilling cold grips Detroit area after New Year's

DETROIT – Wednesday night and early Thursday morning temps will plummet into the teens, again, with near-zero wind chill readings.

By mid-day Thursday, a clipper will race over Detroit and the Lower Peninsula producing a dusting to a half-inch of new snow.  Accumulations will be light enough to manage but high enough to make walking and driving tricky and to keep Motor City Area commuters on their toes.

My fellow Local 4Casters and I have your latest weather forecast at JustWeather.com and on Local 4 News at Noon, 4, 5, 6 and 11.

Many ice fishing enthusiasts have been tempted to venture onto newly frozen lakes, ponds or streams.  However, the ice remains thin and hazardous.

Ice rescues have already been performed throughout the region.  Many have been successful, but at least one was unsuccessful unfortunately (see "Related Links").  Authorities caution all Southeast Michiganders to remain off the ice, for now.

Also, many Detroiters heat rooms of their homes with space heaters.  Many fire officials warn people be aware of the fire hazard they present. It is important to keep these heating devices away from anything flammable, like bed sheets, clothing, Christmas trees or decorations, etc.

Taking steps to prevent pets or small children from accidentally knocking heaters over is good, too.
